The x-eHealth project is a strategic project for eHealth in the European Union coordinated by Serviços Partilhados do Ministério da Saúde from Portugal. This project, which has the commitment of 47 actors within the Health sector -among which are numerous Health Departments from European countries and entities such as HL7 and IHE Europe- has the main objective of establishing the bases to achieve the exchange of data from health between countries in an effective, interoperable and safe way in order to promote progress towards models based on eHealth.

x-eHealth seeks to establish the bases to achieve the exchange of health data between countries in an effective, interoperable and safe manner in a way that favors the advance towards models based on eHealth.

With the aim of promoting Digital transformation in Europe in a fast and sustainable way, this Cooperation and Support Action is based on previous work on the ePrescription and the Patient Summary, and aims to establish the basis for the sharing of medical images, discharge forms, laboratory results and rare diseases. This will advance the creation of a common European interoperability space for data sharing.

The Fundació TIC Salut Social is currently leading the CEF Telecom project for the deployment of the ePrescription and Patient Summary at the European level initiated in EPSOS projects. x-eHealth, then, aims to establish the bases of what will be the continuity of these projects at a strategic level.

Within the project, TIC Salut Social will participate in:

  • Definition of the roadmap for the identification of new domains and use cases that should be included in the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF). These actions will be aligned with the developments that are being carried out in the different countries (CEF project) and in Mapping the challenges at the regional level of the EEHRxF and the state of development in each area.
  • Development of functional specifications, guidelines and frameworks for the exchange of information and laboratory reports based on SNOMED and LOINC; the exchange of medical imaging information, taking into account national standardization activities (DICOM, HL7 IPS) and the exchange of information on discharge reports based on the current Patient Sumary.
  • Definition of the technical specifications for the exchange of information on laboratory results, medical imaging, discharge reports and rare diseases in Patient Summary.
  • Definition of the integration strategy and technical architecture.

The x-eHealth project is framed within topic SC1-HCC-07-2020 Support for European eHealth Interoperability roadmap for deployment of Horizon 2020 and will receive total funding of around 3M euros.
