The Zona Franca Consortium of Barcelona, together with the company HP, Leitat and Seat and with the validation of the Health Consortium of Terrassa and the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell, have developed the first industrialized campaign breather to support hospitals and ICUs in front of the COVID-19 epidemic.

In a press release, the authors of the project said that the functionality of the first designed model has already been tested. One of the advantages of the device is that its production is scalable, “so that a production capacity of between 50 and 100 units per day can be reached next week.” The name of the respirator designed is Leitat 1, and they are described as a rugged, useful, low-complexity medical instrument that facilitates their production and assembly. The design was made by Leitat engineer Magí Galindo and was medically validated by Lluís Blanch, director of innovation at Parc Taulí Hospital and expert in mechanical ventilation.

Production of the respirator will start immediately and in accordance with the pending requirements of the Spanish Medicines Agency. And for its industrial production will have the infrastructure of the Zona Franca Consortium, the production equipment of HP and Seat, as well as the support of the 3D Hub (of DHUB). Airbus and Navantia have joined forces with the alliance to increase production capacity shortly.
