The iSalut Clinical Dictionary is a transversal project that aims to normalize the vocabulary used by SISCAT (the Integrated Health System of the Public Health Network of Catalonia) in order that semantic interoperability can be achieved between providers’ information systems, at different levels of care. Such interoperability guarantees the exchange of data without losing its meaning, allowing its representation and automatic, unambiguous interpretation. The ultimate objective is to support clinical decision-making as part of the healthcare process.
The basis of the dictionary is SNOMED CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms) clinical terminology. The standard serves as the foundation of the dictionary, offering a homogeneous basis through which to represent knowledge. The dictionary also contains other controlled vocabularies that are already used by SISCAT, both locally and internationally (e.g. CIM-9-MC, CIM-10, ISCO / CNO, LOINC, etc.). However, most are mapped to SNOMED CT to guarantee the semantic interoperability of the contents without having to replace them. Each of the dictionary’s domains works at the level of subsets, according to the methodology for creating subsets defined by OFSTI.
The iSalut Clinical Dictionary is managed by a permanent commission that establishes the lines of action to follow and its priorities. A multidisciplinary team of experts from the Catalan Health System is responsible for each domain. As a result, healthcare professionals from different centres, programs and institutions participate in the dictionary. A comprehensive list of contributors can be found in the documentation corresponding to each domain.
