The student, Xavier Francesch, who is in the final year of a BSc in the Design and Production of Videogames at the Tecnocampus, has presented his Final Year Project (FYP) entitled “Inserting a Peripheral Venous Catheter Using Virtual Reality”.
The Fundació TIC Salut Social initially proposed the project and suggested it was conducted at the Tecnocampus in a FYP for students taking a BSc in Video Games or Computer Engineering. The Foundation has been working with the students on the project, while monitoring their progress in order to achieve the objectives proposed in the design of a VR app.
The project involves using virtual reality headsets to train nursing students in how to insert a peripheral venous catheter in an adult patient. As part of the project the students have developed a 3D environment where the user can interact with the different items used by the nurses to perform the procedure. The project uses an Oculus GO VR headset together with its accompanying controller and motion detector.
In order to simulate IV insertion, the users are evaluated on their ability to complete the series of steps involved, with the aim of reducing the likelihood of errors. The students are asked to select the correct medical utensil or object, depending on which part of the procedure they are performing, and to hold it near to the patient’s arm to ensure it is correctly positioned in real life.
