In order to work with interoperable systems it is necessary to adopt international standards, but these standards need contextualisation so that they can meet the integration requirements.

Aimed at identifying which standards must be used and how, the IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise) was born. The IHE is an organisation that defines how to use standards in a practical manner and with a use case defined by the users and applied by the technological solutions.

But IHE not only defines how and which standards must be used, but it also conforms to the application of these standards according to a defined specification.

The European Commission has recently published a list of requirements for the purchase of systems, so that these systems can be interoperable.
