The four-star "Reference site" award, the maximum award given by the EIPonAHA, recognises Catalonia as a territory and leading health ecosystem and benchmark before the European institutions and organisations in the area of innovation in active and healthy ageing, factors which favour the internationalisation and visibility of the Catalan health system, while increasing the chance of creating initiatives and training consortiums in collaborative activities with other European regions.
The Agency of Health Quality and Evaluation of Catalonia (AQuAS), under orders from the Health Department, has coordinated and represented the Reference Site while sharing the leadership with Fundació TicSalut and the Health Universitat de Barcelona Campus (HUBc).
The “Reference site” awards evaluate European regional health ecosystems based on four axes:
1. The political, organisational, technological and financial layout for an innovative approach to active and healthy ageing
2. The capacity to share knowledge and resources for innovation
3. The contribution to European cooperation and the transferability of the practices themselves
4. The demonstration of its positive impact with evidence.
The "Reference site" status is given to the health systems, alliances and ecosystems formed by different players on European regional level (governmental authorities, healthcare organisations and centres, health industry, small companies and emerging companies, research and innovation centres and institutes and also entities and organisations of civil society) which have invested in developing and implementing initiatives in active and healthy ageing. It is a necessary condition that these practices should be innovative and carried out with a comprehensive approach and view, that they should be accompanied by the evidence and impact of their results and that they should therefore support the transfer and multiplication of innovation on the European level.
European Innovation Partnership on Active & Health Ageing (EIPonAHA)
The European Innovation Partnership on Active & Healthy Ageing (EIPonAHA) is a European Commission initiative to gather the most important European players in order to strategically face the social challenges associated with active and healthy ageing, to give visibility to good innovation practices in this area and to facilitate exchange between regions while fostering interregional cooperation and recognition of excellence. Its mission is to improve the health and quality of life of European citizens, and particularly those over 65, to support the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the health and social systems and to increase the competitiveness of the European Union industry via the expansion of new markets.
